We got our first pet rats in April of 2007. We had just lost our family dog to cancer and were looking to fill a void in our lives. We weren't interested in adding a new dog just then, so what get?

I browsed Craig's List for awhile and one day someone had three pet rats and their cage listed. Hmm, rats. I'd known some people who kept rats and seemed to like them a lot. I did a bunch of reading and decided I'd like to give rats a try.

Within a week we were smitten, how had we ever lived without these little creatures?! Our original pair were two relatively old girls. I began trying to find them a young companion so one would not be alone when the other passed. In my search I started to see just how many homeless and unwanted ratties there were. I have a relatively long history with dog and cat rescue and I wondered what was being done for these poor rats.

I decided I was not in a position to start a full scale rescue, I simply do not have the space, time or resources right now. I do, however, have some space, a great vet, and a willingness to nurse sick ratties back to health.

Because we have limited space we take in those in most need. To date we have added three rats over two and a half years, four  rats over two, and a nursing doe to our colony. We have fought megacolon, myco, facial tumors, age, strokes, seizures, barbering, back-to-back pregnancies, pituatary tumors, pyometra, and fibrosarcoma.

As long as we have space and resources we will provide rats with a happy, healthy environment to live out their remaining days.

We are located in Portland, Oregon.
